Introduction Founded by Mormon agricultural pioneers, Mesa is in Maricopa County. It is the third largest city of Arizona. Mesa is so named because the city sits on a plateau overlooking the Valley of the Sun. It is one of rapidly growing cities of Arizona and has become more than a retirement community. Technological advancements, growth of industries and tourist facilities have made it a tourist mecca in its own right. Mesa Arizona Temple, the oldest temple in Mesa is operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mesa has a warm and arid climate. It receives 320 days of sunshine. Saguaro and prickly pear cacti are abundant in the area along with varieties of cholla, and the dry soil. It is also home to rattlesnakes, jack rabbits, bobcats, hawks, and owls. The Superstition Mountain range just to the east of the city provides some altitude to the mesas and valleys of the area.
